So – the Barracks Lane Community garden chicken launch was good fun. Lots of people squeezed into a yurt to hear me read from my tome, and to grill me on the pros of keeping chooks. Questions from what to feed them to how to kill them…Only problem was little Bea who managed to upturn a waste paper basket and stand next to me with it on her head. Upstaged by a five year old – agh. Wanted to give her a biff but feared my audience would not approve. Anyhow, her sister (sitting demurely at the back, overseeing the book stall) still got the biggest laugh – that bit where I eat my own chicken and she says it’s like eating one’s own parent.

Read article in Weekend TV mag. For past 10 years I have kept 3 hens in a moveable ark in my garden. I get point of lay hybred hens and I sell them off after 13 months. No need to kill. Never give them names so grandchildren dont miss them. Go away on holiday and have ordered 3 more for when I return. Like you I keep them for thier eggs. They are not pets but are looked after with loving care. Never lost any to the fox or badger as they are very well protected and never let out. I have not got your book but will tell any new hen keepers about it. Well done & good luck.
